Have you walked around recently and wondered, “Where did that building go?” Development Options Halifax believes there are huge negative costs to all the building demolitions we’re seeing in Nova Scotia in recent years. Affordability, community character and the climate crisis are just a few of the high-priced impacts when useful buildings are demolished before their end of life.

Petition: We are so concerned Development Options Halifax is circulating a petition calling on the Premier of Nova Scotia to stop the demolitions. Sign the petition HERE.

We believe that many better options exist. These don’t need demolitions. That’s why we've organized two free events (June 22 and 25) to show you the why and the how of real solutions. If we make better choices we can add newcomers to our city without demolitions; these ‘big picture’ options can help protect affordability, community and the climate.

Development Options invites you to listen, look and then help stop the demolitions. Show Nova Scotia some love!

But solutions don't come by looking at the problem. We need to understand what better options exist. Then we need to insist that we choose these. Development Options invites you to listen, look and then help stop the demolitions.

1. Talk: The Trouble with Demolitions - Protecting Affordability, Character and the Climate.

2. Walk: Robie Street Roadway Guided Tour - Problems vs Solutions Lab

Recording of the walk will be available soon

Learn why we shouldn’t be tossing buildings away as if they were disposable. We'll use real examples to show that we can house more people without the destruction we are seeing around us.

The talk by Peggy Cameron, Hadrian Laing and William Breckenridge looked at the history of demolitions in Halifax and their price. It will show examples of what we can do instead, how these options can be modelled and have affordability, character and the climate protected.

The walk by William Breckenridge and Peggy Cameron along Robie Street from Williams to North was our “ Problems vs Solutions Lab.’ A lot of people live along Robie. There are many styles of buildings, some include businesses. It’s a walkable neighbourhood with good examples of repurposing, intensification, and readapting traditional historic buildings. But demolitions are rampant-by the dozens. Why is this happening to useful buildings before their end of life? There are better options.
